sources of light

‘Christmas Star’ in the southwest sky.

We climbed to the top of the hill, to get closer to the sky.

If words were fire dancers, I could describe
the morphing colors along our ascent, and I’d leave out the part
where the dog stops to do his earthly business
next to some sweet skygazers,
but by now, our city of fallen angels
knows juxtaposition
of miracles and waste matters, life and death,
patience and wandering stars.

The light was mesmerizing.

What I’ll remember most are the faces
gazing up with naked eyes
searching sky to skyline,
pausing on the shimmering sprawl
of stories, real estate, grass, landmarks, dreams, deadlines, galaxies,

naked eyes, making out
what we could
on an impossibly clear night
seeking what light we could
on an impossibly clear night,
the epicenter
of our darkest day
begging for hindsight.

Here now, with shadows, light,
where our dismantled hearts
could rest, and remember that
some things, also not in our control,
are divine and good.

On December 21, 2020, we got to witness the ‘Christmas Star’
which isn’t a star at all, but actually two planets coming together,
creating brightness. I made a wish anyway.
